clawfoot dining table project

My daughter purchased an antique table on Kijiji  I promised I was I would refinish it. It had an extremely dark stain so none of the wood grain showed through. I haven’t tackled any of the chairs yet as the table was the main priority. It has a lot of character and came with 6 leaves which I finished at the same time as the table

For the top of the table I used stripper as well as sanded to get as much off as I could. From there I decided to use natural SFO to allow the beautiful wood grain to show through. I was told the wood was Red Oak once I got the finish off.

To finish the table top I applied the Fusion natural SFO with a paint brush and then waited approx. 15 minutes then removed the excess with a blue disposable shop cloths  . I applied 3 coats in total waiting for a day in between each coat and lightly sanding before the next coat.

For the legs and apron of the table I washed with FUSION TSP alternative. I lightly sanded because I knew I was going to use FUSION ultra grip. I applied the ultra grip In a thin coat with a paint brush and left it approx. 24 hours before moving to the next step. The next day I did a light sand and then I applied my first coat of FUSION Raw Silk. I waited about 8 hours and did a light sand and applied another coat of Raw Silk. The next day I did another light sand and applied one more coat of Raw Silk and then left it overnight to thoroughly dry. When applying the Raw Silk I painted it on with a paint brush (not too full) and then smoothed out with a dry roller. The following day I did a light sand and then applied Matte Topcoat using a damp applicator pad. After about 2 hours I did my final Topcoat. I tried to make sure I followed the drying time while doing the various steps. All products were purchased at Image One Home & Cottage including the beautiful brushes that I purchased there. They were amazing to work with.  The table is now ready to go and we will put it to the test with my Grandson. Looking forward to our next project re-purposing a dresser. Stay tuned.
